Overview
Volans (originally Piscis Volans), the Flying Fish, is a constellation of the southern hemisphere.
Stars in Volans
There are no named stars in the constellation Volans.
Alpha Volantis (α Vol / HIP44382)
An A class star about 124.3ly from our solar system
Beta Volantis (β Vol / HIP41312 / HR 3347)
A K class variable star of spectral type K1III to K2III and is 107.96ly from our solar system. β Vol has an apparent magnitude of +3.77.
Gamma Volantis (γ Vol)
With a brightness of +3.75 γ2 Volantis (HIP34481A) is classed above β Vol as the brightest star in Volans. Closer inspection reveals that γ2 Volantis is actually a double star, its companion, γ1 Volantis (HIP34473B), providing part of the total brightness we see as one star.
γ2 Volantis is giant variable star about 141.68 light years from Earth while γ1 Volantis is an F2 dwarf star 147.18 light years away.
Delta Volantis (δ Vol / HIP35228)
An F class star with a spectral type of F6II located 660.224ly from our solar system
Epsilon Volantis (ε Vol / HIP39794)
A spectroscopic binary system comprising of ε Volantis A, a class B star with a spectral type of B6IV and an apparent magnitude of +4.45, and ε Volantis B with an apparent magnitude of +7.3. The Epsilon Volantis system is located about 642 light years away.
